No players have come across since then with such apogee and influenced as many. But Steve Vai actually makes the guitar an anttractive instrument to listen to.

If you are a fan of Vai and his style and skill, then Steve Vai: Live at the Astoria London will be a mesmerizing, fascinating experience. You get to see Vai and his band of equally adept players mold and configure music into notes and variations unknown to mortal man. They take the stage, hold it firm for over two hours and never once let you experience expertise meltdown. Perhaps this is why the set, while energetic and intense, also feels cold and calculated. Without a huge hit single or dozens of chart-topping albums to feed his coffers, Vai obviously makes the road and his touring the financial bread and butter of his career. He'll even throw in a few jokes or philosophical bon mots just to liven up the proceedings. Take away the long hair, the chiseled good looks, the ragged robes of many colors, and the musical virtuosity, and you could be staring at Wayne Newton, rounding out the second of two shows a night with a rousing rendition of an obscure Jimmy Hendrix tune. Vai may be electrifying, but that doesn't always translate into engaging.

He is a truly guitar hero and a supremely gifted master at seven-string improvisation. He can make his instrument gently weep, speak and say, and cry like a baby. If it is audible, Steve can recreate it and then improve on it with his precise fingering and whiplash strumming.

Native Instruments has announced an upcoming expansion to its Traktor DJ software, Traktor Pro. Pro utilizes an updated interface with four decks, specifically improved for live performers; the layout is said to be high-contrast and scalable, with cue and looping controls altered to be easier to use on the fly. Native has likewise added the Crate Flick feature, which lets DJs browse music files as if they were in a typical record crate. Supporting the interface changes is a new performance effects section, divided into two multi-effect units with a combined total of over 20 effect types such as Iceverb and Reverse Grain. To create more original sounds, DJs can chain together up to six effects. The MIDI component of the program has been enhanced with a "MIDI modifier" function, which permits dynamic and/or multi-layered assignments to knobs and faders. Changes to MIDI sync should meanwhile enable integrated use of add-ons, like drum machines or sequencing software.

Traktor Pro introduces a new graphical user interface that features a new efficient workflow. The concise, completely scalable screen layout with clear, high-contrast elements results in an interface that is highly convenient to work with under all conditions. CopyFaster will try to read from the same section of the hard disk (where the head is positioned) multiple times before causing the head to move to another position (which is time consuming).
• Uncached file access - CopyFaster bypasses Windows 2000’s file cache which normally speeds up repeated access to the same file, but is less useful for big files. Bypassing the file cache prevents extra wasted memory-to-memory copying from occurring.
